I am someone who has always loved the idea of turning one item into something else. I have upcycled plastic bags into all kids of things like jewelry, hand bags, packages for mailing and more. Then I came up with this idea to turn it into a basket bowl. If you are someone that can crochet, you can make this.
Upcycled Plastic Bag Basket Bowl
Plastic Bags (Depending on how big you make it will depend on how many you need. For the one in the picture, it took 50-70 bags.)
Crochet Hook “H”
Cut off all handles of the bags. Then flatten out the bags and fold them lengthwise until they are about 2 inches wide. Now cut them into approximately one inch pieces. Open them up and lay one end of a piece over the end of another piece. Now take the other end and feed it through the first, so that the pieces interlock with each other. Then pull tight, now they should be joined together with a small knot.
Take the end of the connected strips and wrap it over the end of the crochet hook. Then twist it around itself. With your thumb, hold that in place while you hook it over the end of the hook again. Now pull it through the first loop on the hook. Do that four times, this is called chaining. Now place the hook in the first loop you did. Then loop the bag over the end of the hook and pull it through both loops. Hook the bag again and pull it through that loop.
Now you have a center hole. Place the hook through that center hole and hook the bag. Pull the bag through the center hole, then hook it on the other side. Pull that third loop you just hooked through both other loops. Keep repeating these steps until you have worked all the way around. Connect the last piece to the first, by placing the hook in the first and pulling the bag through both. Then do another single loop to start the next row.
Sticking the hook into the tops of each piece you just did, we will work our way around again. This time every time you finish a loop at the top of those pieces, chain a single loop before putting the hook into the next piece. You can keep doing these steps until you have worked the base of your bowl as large as you want it to be.
To start rounding the side, its easy. Simply keep doing the same steps but this time don’t add the single chain between each one. By doing that you will keep the same size around on each row and not keep growing it. This will make the bowl shape. After you have it to the height you want your bowl, we need to end it. Work all the way around your last row and then place the hook through the first loop of that row. This time instead of chaining one to start another row, you will simply pull the bag all the way through both loops. Send the tail of the plastic back through the other side and then through itself to tie a knot. Then on the outside of the bowl run the tail down through a few rows using your crochet hook. Now just snip off the remainder part and you are done.
